Digital Television (DTV) Transition

DTV Report Summary

The digital television transition has started, by end June 2009 22 million Americans who rely on free over-the-air analog broadcasting will have buy convertor boxes or be at risk of losing access to TV. On February 17, 2009, one-third of analog television stations changed to digital and all remaining television stations will make the transition to digital between April 16 and June 12. For the 22 million Americans who are forced to transition their television or be left in the dark, information and help to transition their television can be difficult to find. Most consumers are turning to electronic store retailers for information – but these same retailers would benefit more from the sale of a new HDTV television rather than the sale of a converter box.  Our 2008 report highlight the gaps in retailer knowledge and the potential problems that come from retailer bias.

Buying an expensive TV set is not the only way to prepare for the upcoming digital TV transition. With government coupons (links below), Americans can save money by purchasing low-cost convertor boxes for only $40.
